According to Wikipedia, Chatroulette is an online chat website that pairs random users for webcam-based conversations. Visitors to the website begin an online chat (text, audio, and video) with another visitor. At any point, either user may leave the current chat by initiating another random connection. The site is still up to this day but the frenzy around it died but a small community of users still persist.

Did you know that when the Chatroulette video app was created, its founder was only 17 years old then? Andrei Ternovskiy is a high school dropout from Moscow, Russia. He was raised in humble circumstances and he hatched the idea for Chatroulette while working as a salesman at his uncle’s souvenir shop called Russian Souvenirs. But he was fired within a month because if a tourist asked for a discount, he always happily obliged. He then holed up at home and began coding for what would be one of the world’s talked-about website. Ternovskiy first started writing codes when he was in fourth grade. Like many young Russians with programming skills, he turned into hacking. When he was 11 years old, he came upon zloy.org (zloy means angry), a hacker forum led by a young man named Sergey (a.k.a Terminator), who gives training in cyber warfare. Ternovskiy soon mastered the art of the denial-of-service attack, wherein a target system is paralyzed by a mass of incoming communication requests. Then he moved on to website and e-mail hacking. By the age of fifteen, he had learned “social engineering”, a term hackers used to describe getting what one wants through deceit or manipulation. He posed as a teacher to access some exams before they were delivered to his school. 

Chatroulette app was originally called Head-to-Head.org and came online on August 2, 2009. But his friends didn’t like it. After watching the 1978 movie The Deer Hunter where Vietnam war prisoners were forced to play Russian roulette, Ternovskiy came up with the word chat roulette. On November 16, 2009, he bought the domain name Chatroulette.com for $7 and revamped the code. Now, numerous Chatroulette video apps that were patterned to how the original app works were developed.
