    DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that the longest official chess game lasted 269 moves and ended in a draw? Despite being already established as a game that goes back decades into the past, with the earliest record of it being played almost 1500 years ago, the exact roots of chess is widely disputed, as both its place and person of origin remain unclear. In 1913, a book titled A History of Chess, by Harold James Ruthven Murray stated that chess originally came from Northern India, then spread to Persia. The entire Asian continent soon followed suit and following the Moorish conquest of Spain. The game then grew in popularity within Southern Europe.

The ancestors of chess originated in northern India during the Gupta Empire, where its early form in the 6th century was known as Chaturanga. In Sassanid Persia, the name changed to Chatrang, where the rules were developed further. Another interesting thing to note is that during this time, players started calling “Sh?h!” when threatening the opponent’s king and “Sh?h m?t!” whenever the opponent’s king couldn’t escape from attack, which translated to “King!” and “the king is finished!”, respectively. These call-outs were used similarly as “check!” and “checkmate!” in the modern version of chess. For chess enthusiasts or those who want to improve their chess skills, playing chess with friends will be a great training ground. To those who want to play but has no chess board or even playmates to train with, there are lots of chess apps that you can download on your computer or mobile device.
