WHAT’S THE MEANING?

A life simulation game is a sub-genre of simulation games. Its defining characteristic is gameplay that involves controlling virtual lifeforms. The player gets to play “god” over a group of people, pets, or other creatures. Another term for life simulation games is “A-life games". A-life stands for artificial life. A-life games are close simulations of real-world events. They often feature concepts such as aging and death.

The Sims, which released in 2000, was the first game of its kind. The game initially planned to be a building game and architecture simulator. Yet, the game’s developer Will Wright saw the potential for a life simulation game. This is when he added a virtual person to interact with the objects in the house. Thus, The Sims was born. The simulation for the characters in the game is two-pronged. They are biologically and socially "simulated". They grow, age, die and reproduce. They speak a language. They establish relationships between other Sims characters in the game. A Sims’ needs in the game are from the Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Like a real person, a Sims character act upon their needs. These include his physiological needs, needs for safety, for belonging, and for self-actualization. The Sims now has four installations and has sold over 200 million copies worldwide. The game lands on the eighth spot on the list of best-selling video game franchises of all time.
